Problem:
Renovate this 1940s “Art Moderne” duplex
into a comfortable, cohesive single-family residence while maintaining
and enhancing the original character and style of the structure.
Solution: The
existing building contained some beautiful details and patterns
but because it was a duplex the interior was chopped into small
spaces. The Architect looked to the existing spaces for clues as
to reorganizing functions without dismantling the entire interior.
Some walls were removed and doors relocated. Cabinets, bookcases,
and moldings were added to functionalize spaces and reinforce the
original style.
Sensitive relocation of existing plants by the garden designer
along with a pool renovation, created a tropical oasis in the front
courtyard.
